Career Expo offers choices for a lifetime

Corsicana — A partnership between Navarro College and the Corsicana and Navarro County Chamber of Commerce offered high school students from throughout the region a first-hand look at career ideas Wednesday.

Career Expo 2012, held at the college’s Special Events Center in Corsicana, brought together hundreds of area high school students with employers, colleges, and technical programs designed to offer students a wide variety of choices for what direction they wish to take with their lives.

Represented at the Career Expo were business, industry, educational opportunities at Navarro, and most importantly, face-to-face contact with recruiters, instructors and potential employers that could provide a valuable “next step” in their career choice.

“They can learn about career certificates and degrees they can earn, and also visit with businesses that hire with those certifications,” explained Dr. Elizabeth Wilson of Navarro College.

Students from as far away as Mexia, Italy, Avalon and Milford were in attendance Wednesday, along with most of the school districts in Navarro County, she said.

The Carl D. Perkins Career Center at Navarro College funds the event. Working through the Chamber and the college, high schools students from throughout the Navarro College service area are brought to the campus for the day of information.

“It’s good that the college and community reach out to high school students,” said Paul Hooper, president and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce. “This is an opportunity to see what kind of educational opportunities Navarro College provides.”

Hooper said Wednesday’s turnout was the largest he’s seen in the eight years the Career Expo has been held.

“It’s never too early to decide what you want to do,” he said.

Dr. Harold Housley, vice-president of academic affairs at Navarro, told students the day was about them.

“It is designed for you to start thinking about what you want to do with your career.”

In addition to the booths and displays at the event, students were eligible to apply for several scholarships that will be awarded to attendees at the event.
