Corsicana —
There’s a new attitude these days at The Salvation Army, and the Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours and Open House held there Tuesday spotlighted that fact.
A good sized crowd snacked on nutritious but simple fare, much like is given to people helped by The Salvation Army, and were also treated to guided tours of the facility. Sgts. Toby and Linda Romack, who began their second year in Navarro County in June, are excited about serving the Lord in Corsicana through The Salvation Army.
“Our goal is to get people to stand on their own two feet,” Sgt. Toby Romack said. “For some, this is the first time they’ve ever fallen on hard times, and their stories will break your heart. We are here to help financially and spiritually.”
Romack credits a marvelous staff of social workers and a great bookkeeper and being blessed by the Lord for the positive changes made recently. The Thrift Store has made a remarkable turnaround, and they are praying for a larger store in the future.
“My wife and I had a vision to come and build a new corps here, and we are looking into the future toward a bigger, better building,” he said.
Not only does The Salvation Army bless people in Corsicana, but it is in 126 countries around the world. Romack said 88 cents of every dollar goes back into the community, and their budgets are never extravagant. People are assisted with food, clothing, prescriptions, dental needs, utilities and emergency situations. They also offer counseling to help people with their household budgets.
“Last year, The Salvation Army here helped 633 families — not individuals — with food and gifts for Christmas,” he said. “This year, we will use the old Cinemark building on Seventh Ave. to distribute, because we are expecting the needs to be great.
“Fifty percent of all people who come through our doors are first-timers. There are lots of hurting people in this community. Mark Luera of Family Service Association is co-chairman of our board, and is my prayer partner — and he can testify about how many hurting people there are out there.”

City to consider rules for airport, swear in new attorney
The Corsicana City Council will swear in the new city attorney, and consider requests for money from local charities when the group meets in regular session at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the council chambers of the Government Center, 200 N. 12th St. The new city attorney will be Kerri Anderson Donica. She ran unopposed for the position, along with Municipal Judge Mike Russell.

The Corsicana ISD Board of Trustees will consider selecting an architectural firm for the new middle school when the group meets in regular session at 6 p.m. Monday, 601 North 13th Street.

A former plumbing supply shop that has since become nothing more than one wall and one partial wall, is going to become the latest city park in Corsicana.

They’re different as daylight and dark — she loves soccer and history, he loves math and science. She hails from Flower Mound, he from Malaysia. She is bubbly, outgoing and excited; he is a bit shy, somewhat reserved.

Police department open house Tuesday
The renovation of the Corsicana Police Department got a bit more involved than it was originally intended to. An error with some concrete resulted in water flooding city hall, and forcing replacement of carpeting and flooring. As well, the renovations quickly led to renovations of the municipal court, as well.
