Corsicana —
The public hearing for the proposed sour gas well near the lake will not take place at a special hearing, but will instead take place at the next regular Lake Planning and Zoning Commission meeting on August 5, according to director Vicki Stoecklein.
Whether to allow a drilling variance for Chinn Exploration to put in a hydrogen sulfide (sour gas) well was tabled at the July 1 meeting of the Navarro County Lake Planning and Zoning Commission meeting when the group finally broke up around 8:30 p.m. At the time, the tentative plan was to schedule a special meeting to deal with only that issue.
“We had too many conflicts with people who wanted to come and people who needed to come, so it will just be on the next regular agenda,” Stoecklein said. “We may move it up to 4 p.m.”
More than 45 people were in attendance at the July meeting, many of whom were neighbors or property owners near the lake who didn’t want the well drilled because of safety and property value concerns.
Sour gas is natural gas that contains toxic hydrogen sulfide components. According to one of the experts who spoke at the first meeting, 500 parts per million (ppm) of hydrogen sulfide can be lethal. This well is expected to contain 35 percent hydrogen sulfide, or 350,000 ppm.
Chinn is interested in the well because it has a 70 percent chance of success, and could be profitable not just from the gas but from the condensates in it, said Richard Wynne, project manager for Chinn. Chinn has only drilled one other sour gas well, but Wynne said he has experience with at least 30 similar wells.
This particular well would be close to residences on the lake, just off FM 416. Wynne said the location was chosen to decrease costs, and increase control of the well.

Griffin retires after three decades teaching
When the school bell rings today, it will signal for most the end of the school year and the beginning of summer vacation.
But for Dana Griffin, it will mark the end of his 30-year career teaching ag science at Corsicana High School, the only job he’s had since graduating from college.
Though he is excited about his new horizons, this day will most likely be bittersweet, as 30 years of animals, ag projects, and kids — it’s always been about the kids — draws to a close. -

The other free day was spent on April 9, the Monday after Easter.
“We called it Good Friday, Better Monday,” said Susan Johnson, spokeswoman for the district. -
