Firestone Building Products of Corsicana has once again provided funds for the Navarro College Summer Math and Science Academy.
This program, which began in 2008, is designed to provide middle school and high school students opportunities to see mathematical and scientific principles applied firsthand in the work place. Under the direction of Navarro biology professor Lisa Dillman, the week-long event has focused on topics like human anatomy, geology, computer science, robotics, chemistry, meteorology, oil and gas production and processing, and other areas related to science and mathematics.
Participants have visited area businesses and industries including Firestone Building Products, Corsicana Technologies, Navarro Regional Hospital. Huffman Communications, Collin Street Bakery, Southwestern Medical Center, Careflight Helicopter Services, KAND Radio, Corsicana Bedding, Waco Wetlands, Corsicana Tru-Value Distribution Center, and Guardian Industries,
According to Dillman, the program makes participants aware that the principles and concepts they are learning in the classroom have a practical application in the world of work. It is also an effort to encourage more students to pursue careers in the STEM areas (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).
“We truly appreciate Firestone’s loyal support of this important program,” said Dr. Tommy Stringer, director of the Navarro College Foundation. “Of course, we welcome additional support which would enable us to expand the program.”

Lake named Presidential Scholar

The Dawson Garden Club has chosen the home of Melanie Dotson at 900 N. Fullerton Ave. as the Yard of the Month for May. The lawns, both back and front, are beautifully manicured. The trees are luxuriant as are the flowers encircling them. The front porch is inviting and there are beautiful blooms. The winding path to the front door lends a romantic touch to this beautiful landscape, and there are colorful blooms at the back porch as well. Go by to see this lovely yard.
