Corsicana —
The current phase of construction on Seventh Avenue has reached that point where things will get temporarily worse before they get better.
The contractor working on the project needs to prepare the subgrade for paving at 20th and 24th streets, so cars trying to cross Seventh Avenue will have to turn right, instead.
The southbound lane on 20th should be reopened on Friday when the hot mix is laid. The traffic on 20th Street going northbound will still have to turn right onto Seventh Avenue.
“They’re doing the subgrade treatment we have to do,” explained Darwin Myers, area engineer with the Texas Department of Transportation. “It’s an 8-inch lime treatment we do under pavement for stability. That’s what’s being done at those intersections now. That will be covered with four inches of asphalt, and then 10 inches of concrete pavement above that.”
The hot mix asphalt will be poured on Friday, if all goes well.
The intersection at 20th will still be closed off to traffic trying to cross all four lanes on Seventh Avenue, and 24th will allow southbound traffic only.
“The concrete pavement is scheduled for Monday night, and we plan to open that by mid-day Tuesday at both intersections,” Myers said.
Within a week, the construction will move towards the outside lanes, specifically, the south side lanes first, meaning that drivers will need to get used to a different lane.
The original plan for the reconstruction of Seventh Avenue had been to do four blocks at a time, but when the contractors fell behind schedule they decided to combine the eight blocks between 20th and 28th.
“It has saved quite a bit of time,” Myers said. “Overall, it’s been quicker doing both phases together.”
This weekend, crossing over Seventh Avenue will need to be done at 28th or 15th streets, on the west and east ends of the construction work.
That will be in place until the concrete paving is completed and opened on Tuesday.
At 24th Street, the southbound direction will stay open, and traffic will be moved to the northbound side as the hot mix work is done.

Police department open house Tuesday
The renovation of the Corsicana Police Department got a bit more involved than it was originally intended to. An error with some concrete resulted in water flooding city hall, and forcing replacement of carpeting and flooring. As well, the renovations quickly led to renovations of the municipal court, as well.
