Cotten honored with plaque, engraved Henry rifle

Corsicana — Sheriff Les Cotten was honored Wednesday evening by the Navarro County Sheriff Reserve division, a unit of men and women who are dedicated to “backing up” the Sheriff’s Office, by helping when deputies have time off, by picking up details such as security at Kiwanis Classic (for instance), and stepping in to assist the Sheriff’s Office in any way needed.

“We thank Sheriff Cotten for 20 years of being supportive of this division,” said Captain Len Gorzynski. “Most of all, we thank him for being our friend.”

Cotten was presented with a plaque, and an engraved Henry rifle. He, in turn, presented each member with a challenge coin to commemorate his 20 year term as sheriff.

“Thank you again for 20 years of support,” Cotten said. “I appreciate your participation, and hope you will give Elmer the same support you’ve given me. I’ve enjoyed my 20 years as sheriff .... been a lot of ups, lots of downs, but more ups than downs. We just got in there and got the job done.”

Cotten also presented service anniversary pins to the following: 10 year pins were received by Bob Moehring, Tammie Cunningham, and T.C. Lawhon. Receiving 24-year pins were Len Gorzynski, Gary “Yig” Patterson and Susan Foreman.

Sharing some law enforcement memories turned in to amusing stories told by Sheriff Cotten. When asked what his most memorable challenge was, Cotten mentioned several murder cases, but ultimately stated the tension during the time in 1993 when the Ku Klux Klan, NAACP, and the Black Panthers were all gathered on the courthouse lawn would have to rank the highest. He said it took every law enforcement person in the county as well as the Texas Rangers to keep order during that week.

“I appreciate everything tonight, and over the years,” Cotten said to the reserve officers.

Sheriff-elect Elmer Tanner stated that he had worked for Cotten every day of his career as sheriff, and he would miss him.

“He is a friend, and it has been an honor to work for him,” Tanner said. “He is an upstanding man and law enforcement agent.”

“The 39 Steps” is the latest production by the Warehouse Living Arts Center, and it’s simply charming.
If you’ve seen the Alfred Hitchcock version of the movie, you might be ahead of the game, but I hadn’t and so it was all a lovely surprise to me.
