Jane Hodges Schreiber Payne

Jane Hodges Schreiber Payne, age 89, of Temple died Friday, Feb. 17, 2012 at an assisted living facility in Corsicana. She died peacefully knowing the certainty of the resurrection and an everlasting life.

She was born in Falls County, Texas in 1922 to J. Fred and Ethel Quinn Hodges. Her early years were spent in Burlington, Texas where her parents were teachers in a two-room schoolhouse. With this experience, she began her lifelong love of education. After high school in Rosebud, she attended and graduated from Texas Woman’s University in Denton with her teaching degree. During World War II, she contributed to the war effort by working in the shipyards in Houston. While the war was horrible, an enduring memory of hers was how this country uinted as one to preserve liberty in the world.

In 1945, she married Lester B. Schreiber, and lived in Topeka, Kan., Temple, and then San Antonio. She loved children and had a fruitful career as a teacher and later as a school counselor. To further her education, she earned her masters degree from Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio. After Lester’s retirement, they returned to Temple and she retired from the Belton school district in 1982. They then traveled together, especially enjoying Europe, Western Canada, and Alaska. Lester died in 1993. She married Harold Payne in 1995, and they enjoyed 14 years of travel, bridge, dominoes and friends, he died in 2009. Jane was blessed to have two men in her life that loved her dearly. Jane provided selfless care to both during extended illnesses.

Faith was a vital part of her life and she was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Temple.

Jane is survived by two children, James Schreiber and wife Mary and Kathryn Huffman and husband Lonnie; six grandchildren, Lisa Nathan and husband Rodney, Joseph Schreiber and wife Shavonnah, Nelson Clausen and wife Erika, Christopher Clausen and wife Samantha, Laura Hooper and husband Phil, and Cindy Schreiber; and six great-grandchildren, Hallie Loudermilk, Hanna Clausen, Tommy Nathan, Jimmy Hooper, Kaitlyn Nathan and Harper Clausen.
