Corsicana —
Georgia Everitt Blair Martin, 99, of Itasca died peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012 at Navarro Regional Hospital in Corsicana from complications following surgery, surrounded by her family.
She was born the oldest of four children on Sept. 1, 1913 to Francis (Frank) Sloan Blair and Maud Iva Harris Blair. Georgia attended public schools in Ponder and Pilot Point, Texas graduating in 1930. At the age of 19 she received her Bachelors Degree in public School music from North Texas State Teachers College after singing in the college choir and playing in the piano ensemble for three years. She was an accomplished pianist and at the age of 10 began playing for services at her church, revivals, weddings, funerals and other activities. She loved to make music and when she sat down on the bench, she was all business.
Mrs. Martin taught school for 31 1/2 years. Her first assignment was with Ponder Elementary School for one year and the next 30 1/2 years with Itasca Public Schools where she taught in the elementary grades. She was not just a teacher but an educator. She wanted every student to learn all that she could give them and if someone needed extra help, she was always there to help them. She also had a paddle in her desk drawer that you only needed to be introduced to once. Georgia was skilled in penmanship and did the writing on countless diplomas and other official documents for both the school and the city.
On Sept. 22, 1939 Georgia and Joseph (Joe) Charles Martin were married in his parents home in Itasca and were married for 58 years until his death in 1997. To that union two children were born, Katherine Blair Martin and William Joe Martin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Mary Alice; two brothers, Frank Blair Jr. and Robert Hugh Blair; husband, Joe; and son-in-law, Edward Seely.
Georgia is survived by her daughter, Katherine Blair Martin Seely of Justin; son, William (Bill) Joe Martin and wife Sue of Corsicana; three grandchildren, Michael Lee Seely and wife Tammy of San Antonio, Scott Edward Seely and wife Tammie of Ardmore, Okla., and William Collin Martin and wife Z'Anna of Corsicana; five great-grandchildren, Courtney Nicole Seely and Cole Walker Seely of San Antonio, Trevor Scott Seely of Ardmore, Okla., Hadley Everitt Martin and Rylan Tripp Martin of Corsicana; numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
Mother has been our rock. She was always there for us and taught us that there was only one way and that was through Christ. To say that she will be missed is sorely inadequate but we will find strength knowing she is with her Lord and Savior. Surely he said “Welcome Home good and faithful servant, welcome Home."
Funeral Service is at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, 2012 at the Central Baptist Church in Itasca. No visitation will be held.
