Bennie Thomas Jr. was born Dec. 9, 1929 in Corsicana. He passed on Sept. 25, 2012. He was the fifth child of Bennie Thomas Sr. and Beatrice Thomas.
He graduated from G. W. Jackson High School in 1947. He served in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge in October 1948. He completed his Bachelor’s in Mathematics and Science from Huston-Tillotson College in Austin in 1953. While a student at Hutson-Tillotson, he participated in various clubs and was a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated. He received a Master’s in Education from Prairie View Agricultural and Mechanical University in 1968. He taught in the Corsicana school system and was affectionately known as Mr. Bennie. He retired in 1994 after 31 years of service. He was also a professional barber for 50-plus years.
He married Peggy O’Neal Anderson on Dec. 24, 1957. Together, they had four sons and were married for 37 years. She preceded him in death on Dec. 25, 1994. His third son, Ronald Thomas, preceded him in death on July 16, 2005. Later, he was briefly married to Myra Winkley.
Survivors include his children: Linda Buffin (Eddie) of Rosharon, Texas; Bennie Harold Thomas (Regina-deceased) of Corsicana; Donald Thomas (Sandra) of Corsicana; Ramon Thomas of Corsicana; and James Waters (Foster Son) of Lancaster. In addition, he is survived by a sister, Shirley Ware of Corsicana; sister-in-law, Cora Lee Thomas of Corsicana; sister-in-law, Berline Thomas of Indio, Calif.; sister-in-law, Birdie Haggerty of Shreveport, La.; and brother-in-law, Donald Ware of Corsicana.
He had 21 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, cousins, and countless friends.
Visitation will be noon to 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, 2012, at M.R. Smith Parlor for Funerals in Corsicana. A Wake Service will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, 2012, at Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012, at Mt. Olive Baptist Church with Pastor Alfred Cox officiating. Interment will follow at Woodland Memorial Park.
