Army Staff Sergeant Nelson David Trent was killed in Kandahar, Afghanistan by an Improvised Explosive Device on Dec. 13, 2012. The Taliban has taken credit for the car bombing.
Nelson had served in the military for 12 years on active duty. He was assigned to the 56th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 36th Infantry Division, Fort Worth.
Nelson was born on April 5, 1975, in Tyler. He was raised in Whitehouse, and graduated from Whitehouse High School in 1993.
A memorial service was held in Tyler at the Stewart Family Funeral Home on Dec. 23, 2012. His body was escorted from the Tyler Pounds Regional Airport by the Patriot Guard.
He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, P.E. and Esther Trent, formerly of Corsicana; maternal grandparents, Clement (Tex) L. and Fern B. Zaiontz, formerly of Denver, Colo.; and his paternal aunt, Emma Lou (Trent) Clemons, formerly of Killeen.
He is survived by his wife, April; his two children, David, age 9, and Camryn, age 4. He is also survived by his parents, Percy and Fritzi Trent; sister, Tracey Trent; and brother, Brian Trent; maternal aunt, Jeanie Varela; paternal aunt and uncle, Wanza Warren and David Trent, both of Corsicana; and many cousins, nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
Nelson will always be remembered as a loving son, loving husband, a devoted father, and an exemplary American soldier.
He was posthumously awarded the rank of Sergeant 1st Class.
Interment will be at a later date at the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.
