Ruth Elizabeth (Erwin) Gunter, 101, of Midland, formerly of Corsicana, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013 at Manor Park in Midland.
Ruth was born April 24, 1911, in Irene to E.W. Erwin and Emma Pendleton Erwin, the fifth of seven children. She grew up in the Woodbury Community. She met Raymond Gunter at business college in Hillsboro, and they were married Sept. 30, 1930, in a double wedding ceremony with her brother Ed Erwin and his wife, Francis. Ruth and Raymond lived on a farm in the Brandon community until 1945 when they moved to Corsicana where they remained the rest of their married life. Raymond died in 2000; Ruth remained in Corsicana until she moved to Midland in 2008 to be closer to family.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Ed, Weldon, and Herbert Erwin, and one brother who died in infancy; two sisters, Margie (Erwin) Brand and Sylvada (Erwin) Lewis; grandson Lee McGraw; and son-in-law, Jack McGraw.
She is survived by two children, Don Gunter and wife Lynda of Tyler, and Wanda (Gunter) McGraw of Midland; seven grandsons, Tim McGraw and wife Terri, Scott McGraw and wife Connie, Kyle McGraw and wife DeAnn, Travis McGraw and wife Donna, all of Midland, Steve Gunter and wife Liz of Plano, Greg Gunter and wife Mary Jane of Frisco, and Dr. Jeff Gunter and wife Lori of Denver, Colo.; 15 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
While in Corsicana, Ruth worked at Adams Hat Factory, Ruby Hendon Dress Shop and many years at the Fireside Gift Shop.
Ruth was a faithful member of the Westhill Church of Christ in Corsicana and then the Fairmont Park Church of Christ in Midland. She spent her life serving and caring for others.
Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at Westhill Church of Christ in Corsicana. Viewing will be available from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013 at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home. Interment will be at Resthaven Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Tim McGraw, Scott McGraw, Kyle McGraw, Travis McGraw, Steve Gunter, Greg Gunter, Dr. Jeff Gunter and Sammy Mosley.
