Angel Gwendolyn “Nonie” Walls Almond was born May 8, 1918 in Camden County, Mo. The house where she was born is now under the Ozark Lakes. When she was five, the family moved to Healton, Okla. where she lived until she married Glen B. Almond on Oct. 3, 1935. Following Glen’s job promotions in Magnolia/Mobil Oil, the family moved several times in the Addington, Okla. area where their three children were born. In 1950, Angel and Glen moved their family to Salem, Ill. then to Fredericktown, Mo. in 1953, to Corsicana in 1963, then back to Salem, Ill. in 1966 and finally back to Corsicana in 1970. The oldest daughter of a large family, Angel learned early to cook and care for children. Everywhere she lived Angel made friends through her support of her husband, her children, her church and her cooking. Like all good Southern women, Nonie showed her love by cooking. If she loved you, she cooked for you. If she REALLY loved you, she prepared a feast with your favorite casserole and numerous pies and cakes. The really good cakes had swirls on top and the best pies were cheesecake or coconut and pineapple.
As the matriarch of the Walls and Almond clans, Angel loved to tell stories of Model T’s, life before electricity and indoor plumbing, the Great Depression and World War II – and we all loved to listen.
Nonie was loved by all who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Mary Anna (Riviast) Walls, her step-father, Rev. C. O. Sharp, her brothers, Elvin and Ernie Walls, her sisters, Golda Bryant, Mabel Warhola, Pauline Graves, Wanda Lee Walls and Margie Peck, her husband, Glen Almond, her grandson, Chris Almond, her son, Jim Almond, her foster brother Otto Koch, her step-daughter Peggy Cox, three nephews and one niece.
Angel is survived by her son, James Almond of Corsicana, her daughter, Glenda and son-in-law Wayne Voelmeck of Avondale, Penn., her brother, Joe Walls of Houston, plus eight nieces, two nephews, eight grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. Angel was a strong, loving and supportive wife, mother, sister, daughter and friend. She was the best gravy maker West of the Mississippi. Nonie loved Elvis (and her family) and we all truly loved her in return.
Visitation with the family will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, 2013 at Corley Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013 at the Corley Funeral Home Chapel in Corsicana with Dr. Mark Luera officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Corsicana.
