Ulys ‘Perry’ Taylor Jr.

Ulys “Perry” Taylor Jr. passed away Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012 at his home in Corsicana.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012, at Resthaven Memorial Park. A reception will follow at Corsicana Believers Bible Church at 2400 Bowie Drive until 1 p.m.

Perry was born to Evie May and Ulys Perry Taylor Sr. in Oilton, Okla.  He served in Army Air Corp from the winter of 1943 to April 1, 1945 as a side-gunner on the B-24. His service included missions in WWII, for which many are grateful. Later he worked as radio broadcaster and is most remembered for his years at KAND radio where his distinctive voice could be heard for 36 years. On occasion, he let the listeners know when our team scored their way to “happy valley.” During his time at the radio, he also worked to complete his Bachelor of Science from East Texas State University and graduated in 1981. His zeal for learning led him to continue taking courses on a wide variety of topics throughout his life.

After his retirement at age 61, he was busy traveling, hiking with his daughter, golfing with family and friends, attending poetry club, playing in his band, Grateful We’re Not Dead, dancing at the Elks’ Club with Norma, writing a book for the family and frequent tea-times with his son and daughter-in-law. Even with a life full of activities, he never missed a family occasion, which often included his lively story-telling or poetry recitation.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 37 years, Peggy Beggs Taylor; and his sisters, Juanita Taylor Price and Geraldine Taylor Whitworth.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Lynn Taylor, of Corsicana; his daughter and son-in-law, Jan Taylor Hair and Travis Hair of Scottsdale, Ariz.;  his sister, Jo Clark of Colorado; his friend and dancing partner, Norma Garrett of Corsicana and her daughter, Barbara Scott of Ennis; his four grandchildren, Tina Taylor Dobson and her husband Brandon of Mansfield; Wendy Hair Look and her husband Scott of Scottsdale, Ariz., Eric Taylor and Renata Nogueira of Frisco, and Allison Hair of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; his eight great-grandchildren, Taylor Look (17),  Austin Look (14), Savahannah Dorvee(16), Sierra Dorvee (12), Gavin Taylor (12), Jake Dobson (11), Gage Taylor (8), and Kenzie Lynn (6); his nephews, Mike Whitworth of Oklahoma and Donny Price of Longview; his niece, Pam Price of Longview; and his nieces, Wanda Robertson, Sandy Hart and Kathi Hein, all of Colorado.

The family is sure that Perry would like to remind his golfing buddies to stay out of the sand when you can and keep aiming for that little flag we could once see with ease but of late can only find from memory.  And of course to all Americans, he would say, “Go Vote!”

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
