Corsicana —
Winona Anita Stewart, resident of Corsicana, passed away on Tuesday morning, Feb. 12, 2013 at her residence at the age of 92. She was born Friday, Dec. 17, 1920 to James Rufus (Jim) and Etna Stewart in Corsicana. She attended schools in Corsicana and graduated from Corsicana High School.
She received her bachelor's degree from Abilene Christian College and her master's degree from North Texas Teacher University.
She taught for 42 years, retiring in 1984.
She was a member of Church of Christ - Westhill. She taught classes and worked with the bus ministry.
In 1989 she was selected as Outstanding Older Citizens from the Texas Department on Aging for her volunteer work.
She was a member of the Navarro County Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of the Alpha Rho Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International Society, an honorary teacher organization. She was a member of the Navarro Regional Hospital Auxillary where she served many hours of service. She began volunteering at Navarro Regional Hospital on July 30, 1984. She served as President of the Auxiliary from 1992-1993 and 2007-2008. She was the first volunteer to reach 20,000 hours of serving others in April 2005. She served on many of the auxiliary committees. She loved buying for the Gift Shop and going to market, conventions and district meeting. In 1997 she received the First Humanitarian Award in recognition of volunteer service in the community at the hospital. She was an active member of the Kinsloe House, the Woman's Club House Association of Navarro County. She was also a member of the Literary Club.
She is preceded in death by her parents and four brothers, two of whom were Ferma C. Stewart and Maco Stewart.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Leland Stewart, Sandra Stewart, Sharon Stewart, Sally Van Gee and husband Stephen, Paul Stewart and wife Dianne, Mary Randolph and husband Dennis, Jim Stewart, Terry McElroy and husband Pete, Chris Stewart and wife Michelle; 26 great nieces and nephews; 26 great great nieces and nephews and two great great great nieces.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013 at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, 2013 at Westhill Church of Christ. Burial will be at Ward Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Paul Stewart, Jim Stewart, Chris Stewart, Stephen Van Gee, Pete McElroy, Scott Bechtel, Don Bechtel. Honorary pallbearers will be Dennis Randolph, Leland Stewart, and great nieces and nephews.
