Diane Ragan Kirk

Diane Ragan Kirk, 64, of Katy, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012, with her loving husband of 45 years, Joe Kirk, and her daughter by her side after battling gallantly with a difficult illness.  Diane spent the past several weeks enjoying the company of her best friends and a loving family.  She had a passion for life.  By focusing her attention towards those around her, she brought light and happiness to everyone who knew her.

Diane was born on Nov. 28, 1947, in Barry to parents Braxton and Opal Ragan. She was the youngest of four children. As a child, Diane attended Barry Baptist Church. She graduated from Blooming Grove High School where she was the captain of the girls varsity basketball team. After graduation she attended Navarro Junior College.

Diane met the love of her life, Joe Kirk in the spring of 1963. They dated for only a short while and on Nov. 18, 1967 they married in Durant, Okla. committing to spend the rest of their lives together. They raised a family together and enjoyed the mystery of loving each other unconditionally as husband and wife.

Diane was passionate about many things, but was most notably passionate about her love of football and animals. Her passion for football was evident every time she watched her favorite NFL team, the Dallas Cowboys, or her son and grandson play the game she loved. Diane loved animals. She never turned a stray away and was an advocate for the welfare of all animals.

She was preceded in death by her son, Todd Kirk on May 13, 2002.

Diane is survived by her husband, Joe Kirk of Katy;  her daughter, Tammy Kirk of Katy; her brother, Judge William “Billy” Ragan of Houston; her sister and brother-in-law Joyce and Ramsey Fields of Barry; and her sister, Jane Taylor of Austin. She is also survived by her five precious grandchildren, Taylor, Austin, Ryver, Braxton “Brac,” and Blaine, all of Katy.

The family would like to say thank you for the love of her many dear friends. We would like to especially recognize Nancy Kessler and Donna Smahlik, who rarely left her side and were there with her when she needed them the most.

An incredible special thanks to the UTMB Lung Transplant Team for their service above and beyond:  Dr. Vincent Valentine, Director of Lung Transplants, Gisele Lombard, RN, BSN, CCTC., Margaret James, RN, Jason Lingo, RN as well as the rest of the entire Transplant Team.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, 2012 at the Schmidt Funeral Home Chapel, in Katy.

A graveside service will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at the Dresden Cemetery, in Barry.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to the UTMB Development Services, 301 University Blvd, Galveston, Texas, 77555-0148. Checks are payable to UTMB. Please include on the check memo: “In Memory of Linda D. Kirk. Lung Transplant. FRS 283590.”
