John Densmore Lahmon, 89, of Hilltop Drive, passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2012, at his home, surrounded by his wife and children.
He was born April 21, 1923, in Mount Vernon, Ohio, to the late Leonard Larimore and Gladys Marie (Shearer) Lahmon.
After graduating from Mount Vernon High School in 1942, he served in the United States Army during World War II as a high speed radio operator on the Navy ship USS Virginia. He continued to serve his country in the Army Reserves until 1968, was a lifetime member of the American Legion and served in the Ohio Civil Air Patrol. John was an avid private pilot, logging nearly 1,000 flight hours and also held a 500 foot low level aerobatic waiver. In 1946 he was employed by Lamb Glass as a commercial artist, relocated to Corsicana in 1969, and retired in 1988 after 42 years. Returning to Mount Vernon, John spent many years volunteering at the Station Break and Meals on Wheels, and in 2004 was recognized as the Knox County Outstanding Senior Citizen. In September 2010, John participated in the Honor Flight Columbus trip to Washington, D.C.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Vivian Ruth (Huffman) Lahmon; his children, Patti Lynn Edling of Mount Vernon, Bonni Lu (Edward) Pitts of McKinney, and Jon Dana (Alma) Lahmon of Kingsland; five grandchildren, Erin Renee Edling (Shane) Williams, Jonathan Adam Pitts, twins Trevor Austin and Elizabeth Ashley Pitts, and Alyssa Marie Lahmon; three great grandchildren, Ethan Blaise Williams, twins Isaac Shane and Kade Aaron Williams; two sisters, Mary Belle (Frank) Belcher of Phoenix, Ariz. and Marjorie Dell (Gordon) Fawcett of Utica; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Per John’s request, there will be no service.
