Oranell Mary Martin Tate, of Ferris, a mother of nine and Avon saleslady of many, passed away Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013 at the Twilight Nursing Home in Corsicana. She was 91. Mary was born Sept. 18, 1921 in Fort Worth.
Mary married Jennings Alton Tate in Dallas Feb. 27, 1943. Alton preceded her in death in 1963. She then raised six children on her own. Mary attended St. Michael’s Catholic School in Dallas. She worked as a typesetter for The Ferris Wheel. In 1965, she began selling Avon in the Ferris area and continued to sell until she turned 83 in 2005. She served as a Cub Scout Den mother, Girl Scout leader and local fundraising chairperson for Cystic Fibrosis. A life-long member of the First United Methodist Church, she loved her family, loved music and musicals and hearing her family sing. She taught her family to laugh, to “pull yourself up by your own bootstraps,” and to not “half-way” do anything.
She was preceded in death by three children, Mary Cecilia, Alton Jr. and Daty.
Survivors include six children, Donna Sublett of Rising Star; Paul Tate of Richardson, Harold Tate of Corsicana, Denise Prettyman of Lancaster, Dianne Burton of Lancaster, and Dow Tate of Shawnee, Kan.
She is also survived by eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, at Green Funeral Home, 207 S. Wood St., Ferris.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, at First United Methodist Church in Ferris with Gene Ratliff officiating. Interment to follow at Ferris Memorial Park North in Ferris.
