Arthur Lee Carroll

Arthur Lee Carroll, 85, of Corsicana, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012 at Navarro Regional Hospital. He was born in Corsicana on Aug. 4, 1927, to Thearon and Elnora Carroll. Mr. Carroll remained close to his parents throughout the years. He was child number four out of 10. He attended Booker T. Washington Elementary and Jackson High schools. He attended Grace Temple AME Church since he was a child; and due to health challenges, was not able to attend in later years.

Mr. Carroll worked many occupations, including Adams Hat Factory, Sherwin Williams Paint, Chattanooga Glass and the Lumber Company, to name a few. He was very instrumental in serving on numerous community committees, such as for the academic improvement of students at the Jackson High School to encourage students to achieve excellence to become better citizens in this world; to eliminate segregation at Corsicana High School; Navarro County Action Committee to promote improvements; he walked with Civil Rights Advocates and the war on drugs. He achieved a great number of awards and achievements for working with the city and county schools.

Mr. Carroll was a faithful father to his children, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and mentor to many. He was full of life and had a great sense of humor. He loved to laugh and make others laugh. He was a great fisherman and in his younger days, a great hunter as well. He loved spending time with his friends and family. He had tremendous support from family members and others throughout his illness; especially his daughter, Melony; nephew, Wardel; friends Mr. Polk and Joyce.

For more than 50 years, Mr. Carroll’s wife, Bertha, brought many years of joy, satisfaction and fulfillment to his life. She has been by his side every step of the way. He loved her dearly and when he could not take care of himself, he was trying to care for her when she was ill.

Mr. Carroll was a resident of Corsicana all his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thearon A. and Elnora Carroll of Corsicana; his son, Donald Ray; siblings: Thearon, Charles, William, Rossye, Sr., Elzie, and Maurice Carroll and Ruthie Allen.

Arthur is survived by his wife, Bertha Mae Carroll; his brother, Mr. Vern Carroll of Dallas; his sister and her husband, Shirley and Steve Wynn of Rowlett; six beautiful children from his union of 15 years with Mrs. Grace Marie Carroll Spears, and their spouses: Beverly and Wesley Allen of San Diego, Calif.; Ronald Carroll of Las Vegas, Nev.; Pamela and David Smith of Houston; LaVersa and Billy Ray Williams of Irving; and Melony Anderson of Corsicana; and Elzie Bell of Corsicana; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

 Wake Services are 7 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9, 2012 at the Grace Temple A.M.E. Church located at 402 E. 14th Avenue.

Funeral services are 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012 at the First Independent Baptist Church located at 701 G. W. Jackson Avenue with Pastor Michael Donaldson officiating.  Interment will follow at Woodland Memorial Park.  

Mr. Carroll was a very concerned, caring and loving individual.  God blessed him with a long wonderful life. He was appreciated and will be missed dearly.
