Corsicana —
Betty Lou Gibson peacefully passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, surrounded by her family and caregivers. Betty was born on Jan. 24, 1923 in Iola, Texas, to Dodson and Lillian Mize. She married the love of her life, Louis Gibson on Christmas Day, 1941. They moved to Corsicana, Texas in 1951 and raised four children. She was preceded in death by her husband Louis, her parents, her brother Jerry, and her in-laws, Felix and Jewel Gibson.
She attended high school in Iola where she graduated valedictorian. After graduation, she entered Sam Houston State Teacher’s College. At the beginning of her freshman year, she met Louis Gibson. They dated throughout college and married. In the summer, they moved to Galveston, and Louis began medical school. In 1951, they moved to Corsicana and started the Medical Arts Clinic.
Betty and Louis were married for 65 years. They had a special marriage based on deep love and respect for each other. Together, they became deeply involved in the Corsicana community.
Since Louis was a busy surgeon, much of the responsibility of caring for the children fell to Betty. She relished the task and put all of her energy, determination and love into being a mother to Nancy, Gail, Mike and Pat. The family remembers many fun family outings with their parents to local lakes for water skiing, to New Mexico for snow skiing, and to the deer lease for hunting. Betty was an active participant and amazed the children with her skills.
First Baptist Church was an important part of her life. She made sure that the family attended Sunday School, church and Sunday night services. As the children grew up, Betty loved teaching women college students. She was also active in circle and Bible study. After a family mission trip to Ecuador, she hosted many visiting missionaries in their home.
Betty loved to cook, not only for her family, but for the many guests she entertained in her home. She enjoyed giving dinner parties, teas and parties for the children and their friends. She was a gracious, energetic hostess.
One of Betty’s passions was gardening. She grew orchids, and her patio was filled with specimen plants. Additionally, she planted flower beds and was known for her gorgeous azalea bushes surrounding the Gibson home. She was an active member of the Garden Club and was a state flower judge.
Betty was proud to be a member of DAR, Quintillian, and Medical Auxiliary.
Betty Lou was a farm girl who accomplished her dreams of becoming a mother and a wife. God and family were at the center of Betty Lou’s life. She exemplified the words in Proverbs 31, “Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies.”
She is survived by her children, Nancy and Larry Hodges, Gail and Don Clowe, Mike and Debbie Gibson, Pat and Alicia Gibson; grandchildren, Cameron Hodges, Shannon Hodges, Duncan Clowe, Beth Clowe Miller, Lauren Gibson Bilbao, Ross Gibson, Clay Gibson and Jourdan Gibson; and six precious great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to thanks all of her wonderful caregivers and Dr. Kent Rogers.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, 2012 at Corley Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be conducted at First Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012 with Dr. Danny Reeves officiating.

She was born June 2, 1927, in Blooming Grove.
She worked as a bookkeeper for 35 years at Watson Truck & Supply in Hobbs, N.M. She was a member of Westside Baptist Church. -
