Johnnie Clarence Thompson, 87 of Corsicana, passed away Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012. He was born in Jacksonville on June 25, 1925, to W. L. Thompson and Vivian Wood Thompson.
Mr. Thompson grew up in Chandler, where his father was an agent for the railway. After graduating High School and serving in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, he became a telegrapher for the St. Louis Southwestern Railroad for 26 years.
When the railroad installed Centralized Traffic Control System and the art of telegraphy became obsolete, Mr. Thompson attended East Texas State University at Commerce and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree and two Master’s degrees in education. He then worked for the Corsicana Independent School District as principal of Lee School and Sam Houston School for 25 years. He was a member of the Elementary Principals Organization, Texas State Teachers Association and TEA. He retired in 1990.
He was a member of the Church of Christ where he taught adult Bible studies for many years.
Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife, Sue of 63 years, three children, Suzanne Shamburger and husband Steve of Killeen, Jill Marshall and husband Donnie of Corsicana, John Todd Thompson and wife Janet of San Antonio; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012 at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home.
Service will be 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012 at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home Chapel with David Mahoney and Sam Dilbeck officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dan Dominy, Rickie Jennings, Paul Stewart, Louie Williams, Donnie Marshall, Zach Marshall. Honorary pallbearers will be Josh Shamburger and Steve Shamburger.
