James Dexter ‘Jim’ Browning





James Dexter “Jim” Browning, 73, of Gun Barrel City and formerly of Corsicana, passed away Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009, at Heritage Oaks Retirement Village, after a courageous and long-fought battle with emphysema.

He was born in Tyler on March 7, 1936, and was a graduate of the Class of 1954 from Tyler High School. Jim began his meat-packing career at Tyler Packing Company and continued at Dallas City Packing and at Kaufman Packing. He changed his career to his lifelong dream of being a cowboy, moving his family to Prairieville in 1967. He raised cattle and horses, farmed hay fields, participated in rodeos with his wife and son, and rode proudly with the Tri-County Riding Club for a number of years. In 1976, he moved to Seven Points and worked for Corsicana Meat Packing Company. In 1983, he moved to Corsicana and began his business, JB Enterprises, buying and selling eccentric beef products and other commodities. Jim retired from the Corsicana Daily Sun in 2000 and returned to Cedar Creek Lake and enjoyed his retirement relating old cowboy stories, jokes, growing-up stories, and a little “bs” to his attentive family members and friends. He enjoyed the view from his back porch and we all remember his great sense of humor, wonderful smile and good cooking, especially his barbecued baby back ribs! May our cowboy forever ride in peace.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Glenda Carrol Crabbe Browning, and his parents, Edna and Clayton Browning of Tyler.

He is survived by his daughter, Kari Nelson and husband Cody of Purdon; son, Karl Browning and wife Panda of Mabank; grandsons, Kory and Kolton Browning; sister, Judy Braswell and husband Jim of Gun Barrel City; and a multitude of loving, caring, extended family members and friends.

Jim was cared for with loving attention by Dr. Kent Rogers and the entire staff at Heritage Oaks Retirement Village and, for that, the family is most grateful.

Graveside memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18, at Resthaven Memorial Park, 5700 W. State Highway 31, Corsicana, with Kerry Clark officiating. A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, at his home in Gun Barrel City.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like for contributions to be made to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (www.tsrhc.org) or to American Lung Association.
