Mark M. Culwell Sr.

Mark M. Culwell Sr., 81, passed away Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, in Corsicana. He was born on Dec. 28, 1928, to Marion Monroe and Kitty Jones Culwell in McAllen.

Mark was an outstanding member of the Corsicana community since 1958 when he became employed by the Corsicana ISD, first as a coach and athletic director, high school principal, and then 13 years as superintendent. He spent many years serving as administrator of Collins Scholarship Program and Region XII Education Service Center Board of Directors, serving as president for several years. Mark was an active member of Westhill Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. M.M. Culwell; his sister, Doris Rhea Stroud; brother-in-law, Audie L. Stroud; brother-in-law, John W. Voss; brother, Douglas L. Culwell; and niece, Linda Stroud.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Gwen Bankhead Culwell; sons, Mark M. Culwell Jr. and wife Mindy of Dallas and Curtis Culwell and wife Gayle of Garland; daughters, Libby Harris and husband Ron of Fairfield and Caroline Southard and husband Jon of Barry; grandchildren, Jeff Nelson, Joni Jennings, Courtney Nelson, Ashley Olin, Kady Culwell, Madelyn Powell, Lauren Cypert, Kevin Culwell, Steely Southard, Keller Southard, and Paxton Southard; great-grandchildren, Frankie Nelson, Cade Nelson, Paige Jennings, Payton Jennings, Hadley Powell, and Kennedy Cypert; sister, Lila Voss; and 13 nieces and nephews.

A visitation with the family will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14, at Corley Funeral Home Chapel. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
