Unexpected blessings and paying it forward

Corsicana — As I write this on Thursday morning, I have just returned from taking photos at the Nancy Roberts Room at the Corsicana Public Library.

There, I witnessed line dancing by ladies in their 80’s, who’re part of a group called Memaw’s Misfits, and people of all ages right down to infants still in the womb.

I witnessed the Cotton-Eyed Joe, the Chicken Dance, and a bunch of other line dances for which I do not know the names. People were laughing, and sweating, and having a grand old time. This was a part of summer story time at the library, but the crowd was substantial for this departure from the normal program.

If you have interest in an hour of physical activity, fun, and learning something new, Memaw’s Misfits meets from 6 to 7 p.m. each Wednesday at the Senior Activity Center, over near Jester Park. These gals (and guys!) seem to really have a blast. Have to say, this reporter was impressed!

You know, everyone gets down from time to time. And especially when it seems life keeps handing you curve balls one after another (pardon the sports reference — that’s so not me), it’s easy to let the old devil tell you things are hopeless and rather bleak.

Lately it sure seems I have been the recipient of some precious blessings, some anonymous, some not. I guess the good Lord knows just when Satan has really worn you down, and He sends someone to be the hands and feet of Jesus to you.

To those who have blessed me, both recently and in the past, those I know and those I do not — may your blessings be returned to you ten-fold. Please know you have my humble gratitude.

And Lord, help me be a blessing to others who may be hurting, as well.

             —————

On the subject of blessing others, it was stated in a front page story in this newspaper Wednesday that our Navarro County Food Pantry is in need of help. Apparently, since the end of school for the summer, and the closing of some local businesses, the number of people needing food assistance has increased.

Several local businesses have teamed up to hold a concert on Sunday, July 1 dubbed “Hunger Battle 2012.” It will feature local talent, with gates at The Remington opening at noon, music starting at 1 p.m., and a cover charge that will will include a cash donation of your choice and non-perishable food. The Ranch 106.9, The Remington, Brick Street BBQ and Custom T’s are the driving forces behind this effort, and Custom T’s is designing a T-shirt that will sell to benefit the drive, too.

The needs in this county are many among the people, food is just one of the most basic.

If you won’t be in town that day, or outdoor concerts in July don’t hold appeal, it will be great if you want to drop by cash or food donations to Custom T’s, 106.9 The Ranch, or the Navarro County Food Pantry itself.

            —————

There is one hurting family in our county who gave a most precious gift this week. The family of Autumn Grace-Ann Lilley, age 6, donated her organs for other children to have a chance at life after their little girl was severely injured in a car accident and passed away this week. I met her grandparents, who shared this information, stating there had already been recipients for her heart, liver and kidneys.

there is an account established at Community National Bank and Trust for her funeral expenses. If you feel so led to contribute, I’m sure her family would be grateful.

  • Bill Tinsley Memorial Day thoughts

Next Monday we will fly our flag outside our house to honor Memorial Day. It is a tradition my wife brought into our marriage from her father who served in the Pacific during World War II.

Cynical: “...believing that people are motivated in all their actions only by selfishness; denying the sincerity of people’s motives and actions, or the value of living...sarcastic, sneering, etc...pessimistic implies an attitude, often habitual, of expecting the worst to happen...”

In the news this week was an on-line press release from the Department of Environmental Protection for the state of Pennsylvania that they’ve lost a nuclear device off the back of a truck somewhere between Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The Troxler Model 3430 is a radioactive gauge that takes measurements in the ground. The press release from the DEP states that anyone finding the box should not “tamper” with it.

  • Editorial: Seizure of AP phone records insult to independent press

Distrust of government secrecy has been elevated to an exceptional level with the disclosure the Justice Department covertly examined two months of Associated Press phone records to determine who leaked details to the AP about a foiled terrorist plot.
This amounts to spying on an American news organization — common practice in dictatorships but scary conduct in a democratic system that prizes the public value of an independent watchdog press.

I had an unfortunate fall earlier this week and wrecked my back to the point where I cannot spend much time sitting up at my desk to write. Therefore, I am recycling a piece I wrote many years ago about our first trip from Corsicana back to Denver.

  • Janet Jacobs It's my job

A couple of weeks ago, some chowderheads released a study saying that the worst job in America is that of newspaper reporters because of the low pay, long, odd hours and stress.
Number two on the list was lumberjack, which makes sense because trees kill.

The winds have dispersed the mushroom cloud that hovered over the small town of West. The dust has settled. The President of the United States, the Governor of Texas and other dignitaries have come to join in the memorial for those who lost their lives.

  • Platt Dick 2012.jpg Missing the fun

Sad to say, in the 11 years The Little Woman (don’t call me that!) and I lived in Navarro County, we never attended the annual Derrick Days festivities. We followed all the events in the Daily Sun, but we never schlepped into town to “walk amongst em.” I guess, if I were to be honest with myself, I am the reason we never went.

This is excellent advice for any situation, but particularly that crucial job interview.
