Corsicana —
If ever you’ve been one, like me, who battles their weight constantly, no doubt you’ve been on some weird diets.
Just the other day, I forgot part of my lunch and Bob Belcher offered me a packet of tuna from his desk drawer. It reminded me of a time about nine years ago when I was on a specific diet, and brought those little packets of tuna to work with me daily, along with a banana. My office scent was never inviting during that spell. And I never lost a pound.
I’ve tried diets where I ate lots of grapefruit. Those weren’t bad, because I really like grapefruit. It’s just not a handy thing to whoop out of your purse and eat in an elevator.
The diet where you eat only meat (what was it, Atkins?) doesn’t really stick in my mind, though it seems like we ate lots of bacon. I didn’t lose any weight on that one, either. I love bacon, especially if it gets a little charred.
Then there was the one with the green beans and the beets. And lots of carrots, if I recall.
Yep, you got it. No pounds lost with that one, either.
So, because of my health issues of late a friend’s mom recommended a website to both me and my own mom, called greattastenopain.com.
I visited the website finally, and have to admit, what this lady says makes sense.
Now mind you, this is not a diet. It is an eating plan. Big difference. There are no big claims you will lose weight (which is good, since I’ve been following it a month and I haven’t) but it does purport to facilitate better health.
I’m not good with all that anatomy/science type stuff. If you’re interested, just check it out.
The premise is that if you combine your foods properly, you’ll no longer have stomach pain, acid reflux, heartburn, and along list of other ailments this lady claims are caused by improperly mixing food, and thereby causing poor digestion.
I will say that I was taking heartburn meds around the clock, and was still waking with a burning in my chest prior to starting the plan. I now only take those if I fudge on the plan, because I just don’t need them anymore.
Because I have a tendency toward lazy, I only looked at the first sample day of the eating plan, and made myself a food list for the day to take to work. My co-workers know it is still morning if I’m eating oatmeal. They know if they see me eat an apple, I should not have eaten anything three hours prior to that or 20 minutes afterward. And my carrots and peanut butter in the afternoons are how they know 5 p.m. can’t be far off.
Janet has declared this a “weird diet.”
All I know is I bought two books off this website, one that describes all the reasons to eat this way, and the other is chock full of recipes I’m just too lazy to attempt.
All the testimonials on the website of people who’ve used the plan purport weight loss. In actuality, my lack of weight loss could be from the fact I have yet to give up coffee.
The first day I tried the plan, I woke up and had a nice big steaming cup of Constant Comment instead of my customary 6 to 8 cups of coffee. Two hours later, I was laid out with a migraine so bad I had to cover my entire face and head to block out the light and no meds would make it let up.
Not sure, but that may be a sign of a serious caffeine addiction.
So, I’m still stepping it back, trying to wean myself off the coffee slowly. I’m down to 4 cups now. Whereas before, reporters drink coffee all day and all night, right? I lived by that credo.
But it’s a new day for Deedee. She wants to be around to see those grandbabies grow up!

‘Hatfields & McCoys’ should be good TV
Finally, something worth setting the DVR for looms. But it may not come to that. Monday, the History Channel debuts three nights of its new miniseries “Hatfields & McCoys.” Got a feeling I’ll be watching this one without the wife.

And so spake The Little Woman...
Well, where to begin. As previously noted in this space The Big Kahuna (my answer to The Little Woman) deigned to afford me some rebuttal space to comment on the human condition as it pertains to husbands, so here goes.

Back in the Day
When the last part of the month of May rolls around, I can’t help remembering some of the experiences seniors and their teachers and sponsors shared while preparing for graduation ceremonies at Irving High School back in 1990’s.

The Deal
I would have thought by now it’d be pretty simple — perhaps even automatic.
But no.
There are still those who “walk among us” (credit to Jody Dean for that one) who still apparently cannot read or understand simple words, street signs and signals. -
Approaching dogs scientifically
A research project on whether or not yawns are contagious across species lines has been conducted and it shows that dogs will yawn if their people yawn first, according to an article in the Washington Post.

Storm story has happy ending
Most folks I’ve spoken with this week have their storm stories, as do I.
I talked to a slew of folks who had tree and limb damage. Some were philosophical, while others were angry. I’m not sure who there is to be angry at when it’s the weather.
Reminds me of that Persian king Xerxes, whose pontoon ships were sunk in a storm so he ordered his men to go down and beat the sea with chains and poles. It’s a waste of time and effort to get mad at weather. -
Adventures of an intrepid reporter
You know, they say you have to be somewhat “throwed” to work for a newspaper.
I’m here to tell you, it sure helps.
Reporters have to run out and cover wrecks, fires, hostage situations, bomb scares, and the like. Fortunately, we don’t have an unusually high amount of that going on around here. -
Nearing Home
Last week the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association met in Chicago and chose Billy Graham’s new book “Nearing Home” as the “2012 Best Christian Book of the Year.” Dr. Graham turned 93 in November of last year.

Riding High saddles up Saturday for second year
You don’t have to ride to enjoy this horse show. Realistically, your feelings for horses matters very little. If you happen to get a kick out of them, and love children, When Are We Going Home? Ministries has the perfect play date for you.

Marriage counseling
Socrates once said, “By all means marry. If you get a good wife, you’ll be happy. If you get bad one, you’ll become a philosopher.” I hold myself up as the antithesis of this statement because I could never have been blessed with a mate better than The Little Woman
