You, my dear readers, have sure been with me through lots of events in my life. True?
Over the last 10-plus years, I’ve shared many things with you — triumphs and travails alike.
So, I will share with no further ado that I was married last week.
I know! Deanna is all about the “shock value!”
I realize that in a fairly recent column, I lamented about my broken engagement. The gentleman and I, after two-plus years together, went our separate ways. And what we discovered was that we didn’t like our ways being separate — we preferred them together.
And once we figured that out, it seemed silly to waste any more time, and things just seemed to fall into place. My friend, Vicki Gray, and I just happened to be on the phone together, and she just happened to have some time available the day before my birthday (how’s that for thoughtful, girls — now he’ll never forget our anniversary! Unless he also forgets my birthday ...), and we were able to take a short trip together that weekend.
It’s funny to me how sometimes, God will see that we’re just bumping around out here in the dark, and give us a dose of guidance. How you can go along for years believing (or not believing) this one thing, then have one well-timed friend share something, and it just suddenly clicks. Or have people and events come along that give you an entirely new appreciation for someone you’d taken for granted.
So, in the midst of many family birthdays this month, preparations for my daughter Lily’s wedding, and various other things, Will Kirk and I managed to get hitched.
And as I watch my daughter become more and more unraveled by stress, plenty of which is related to this wedding she’s planning, I’m more and more okay with the fact that we went to the Justice of the Peace. I’m claiming my right as a woman to have a longer honeymoon before long (or maybe two!) and maybe even a small ceremony or reception. Who knows.
But now, it’s as if we were never apart, and our bond feels stronger than ever.
He is the one who shared the births of our grandbabies. He has been their Pawpaw since they arrived. He was the one who sat next to me in the church in Arkansas when we said good-bye to my precious cousin Tracey. He is the one who was with me when I got my Crohn’s diagnosis. At my mother’s wedding. At his father’s funeral.
Will has shared many important life events with me, and now he gets to share them all. And no, he didn’t want to be “Mr. Deanna” so I have become Mrs. Kirk!
The Kirks are excited about celebrating Kylie Isabella’s first birthday Oct. 18, Nana’s 70th birthday Oct. 20, and the upcoming nuptials of Lily and John. We feel so very blessed.
God is good, all the time!
