Oak Valley Crime Watch will have its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Oak Valley Community Center. The crime report will be given by the deputies. The program for the evening will be given by Jim Bob Simms, who is with Texas Excavation Safety Systems in Dallas. He will give a presentation which will be very informative to the community. You are invited to bring a dish and join in for this meeting.

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1009 will meet at 7 p.m. at Sirloin Stockade, 2508 W. Seventh Ave., Corsicana. Membership is open to U.S. armed forces veterans who served on active duty (for other than training purposes) in the Republic of Vietnam between Feb. 28, 1961, and May 7, 1975, or in any duty location between Aug. 5, 1964, and May 7, 1975. The veteran must submit a copy of his/her DD Form 214 along with application and dues. Members and guests are invited to come early and eat and visit prior to the meeting.

VOICE will offer the Texas Youth Tobacco Awareness Program, a state-approved program for minors charged with attempted purchase, consumption or possession of tobacco and is designed to the mandates of Texas law. VOICE staff is certified to facilitate this program. The class will be an eight-hour program divided into four two-hour sessions. This session will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 8, 10, 15 and 17. Participants are required to attend all sessions. Classes are $100 (cash only) for all sessions. All participants must pre-register. Big C Jamboree will be held at 7 p.m. at Martin’s Music Hall, 201 S. A free genealogy workshop will be held at the Corsicana Public Library Civic Room, sponsored by the Navarro County Genealogical Society. Leading the workshop will be genealogist, researcher and author Lynna Kay Shuffield. Registration will be from 8 to 8:30 a.m. with introductions and announcements from 8:30 to 9 a.m. From 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. the topic will be “Let’s Get Started — Basic Genealogy,” and from 10:30 a.m. to noon the topic will be “Newspaper Research — War Between the States.” Lunch will be on your own from noon to 1 p.m. The final portion of the workshop on “20th Century Military Research” will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Pre-registration is preferred by calling the Corsicana Public Library Genealogy Department at (903) 654-4810.
Angels of Corsicana will meet at 9 a.m. at 1020 N. Business 45. If you have items to donate for supporting the U.S. troops, please bring to the meeting or you can drop off items at the American Legion Post 22, 632 N. Beaton St., after 2 p.m. daily. Everyone’s help is needed for packing for the troops.
A spaghetti supper fund-raiser will be held for Randall Arnett from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Fannie Mae Vernon Room. “Gym for the Kids,” a kick-off luncheon event, will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Sept. 12 at Boys and Girls Club of Navarro County, 1000 G.W. Jackson Ave. The purpose of the event will be to raise funds to add a gym to the club, which will serve as a positive location for recreation. Kerens Riding Club Ranch Rodeo will be 7 p.m. at the Kerens Riding Club arena, five miles south on State Highway 309, off State Highway 31. Admission will be $5 per person with children 6 and under free. Ten teams (4 person teams) will compete in four events: mugging, trailer loading, doctoring, branding. Kerens Kiwanis Club will have its annual homecoming hamburger supper from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Kerens Alumni Center in downtown Kerens. The cost will be $6 and will include a hamburger with all of the fixings, chips, tea or coffee, and homemade dessert. A fall carnival and festival will kick off at 4 p.m. with a parade of old cars and motorcycle riders down Garitty Street in downtown Frost and then displayed for car enthusiasts at Frost City Park. There will be traditional carnival games, arts and crafts booths, and food. The rumor is that Elvis will make an appearance to entertain along with a DJ and dance at dusk. This event will be a major fund-raiser for the Frost Community Center to stock the food pantry and expand its outreach programs.
