CENTERVILLE —
Mildred’s readmission into the state’s top 10 ended up being a short stay. The Eagles have some work to do.
Centerville ambushed Mildred in a 70-22 thrashing at Tiger Stadium. The 70-mile trip down I-45 turned out to be a sour one for the No. 9 Eagles, who only allowed 40 points in going 10-0 last regular season.
Mildred (1-1) can officially shed last year, and start working on something new immediately.
Centerville moved to 2-0, and did it by land and air. The Tigers scored early and often, and finished the night with 513 yards of total offense.
The Eagles, meanwhile, started the game without sophomore tackle Quinton Weaver, who was lost for the season with a knee injury. But senior Noah Pennell, a preseason all-Golden Circle pick, was back after missing last week with a leg injury.
Matters only got worse for Mildred. Starting left tackle Danny Hanna went down with an ankle injury in the second quarter and did not return. A few plays later, all-Golden Circle defensive lineman and starting guard Thomas Finigmow went down to a possible broken collar bone.
But Centerville didn’t waste time taking advantage of opportunities.
Ryan Payne scored the first of three touchdowns 36 seconds into the game, and Centerville led 21-6 after one quarter. Mildred took a little momentum into the break with a 31-yard Devin O’Sullivan field goal that made it 35-16, and the Eagles knowing they would receive the second half kickoff.
But Centerville forced a punt, got a deep punt return and needed one play to make it 42-16 on a 24-yard run by Payne. On their next possession, the Tigers again just needed one play as Tulley Pickens went 40 yards to make it 49-16.
With 9:10 left in the third, the outcome was academic. It set in after Chase Garrett tossed his second touchdown pass with a minute left in the third to make it 56-22 four minutes after Nic Shimonek’s second touchdown pass had brought Mildred to within four touchdowns.
The Eagles had 366 yards, but turned the ball over three times. Centerville had no turnovers.
Shimonek put the ball up 35 times, completing 23 for 254 yards and two touchdowns, one to Mikey Muncy that made it 7-6 early in the first.
But in a sign of how bad things were for the Eagles, Shimonek also led the team in rushing. Centerville took Draylon Sterling out of the picture, holing him to 15 yards on 10 carries. Shimonek had 67 on 13 carries, and scored on a 13-yard run down the left sideline.

GC Baseball: Unbelievable - Windthorst plates 6 in seventh to stun Dawson
Bo Moore lives by the run. He likes to put pressure on the opponent. A three-run seventh looked like just enough cushion in a five-run game. But it wasn’t. Windthorst scored six runs, five with two outs, to steal a 7-6 win from Dawson in Game 1 of the Region II-1A seminfinals at Weatherford College.

NC Baseball: Bloodlines run deep for top hurler

GC Baseball: ’Dogs want more - Windthorst next up for surging Dawson
At this point, it might be easy to classify the rest of the baseball season for Dawson as gravy. But hold on a minute, coach Bo Moore said. The Bulldogs (20-7) are in the Region II-1A semifinals, the club’s deepest trek in many, many moons. To do that, they beat a Dodd City team that ousted them last year in the area round.

NC Baseball: Multi-tooled, Reeves has brought offense, defense
Navarro catcher John Clay Reeves is back in the World Series. Only this year it’s the JUCO World Series and Grand Junction, Colo., and not the NCAA Division I College World Series and famed Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb. like it was in 2012.
