Point After: Fields steps up again for injury-riddled Tigers

Corsicana — It is a tired but so often true cliche: The one that says “when the going gets tough, the tough get going.” For the last two weeks, when the Tiger going got tough, running back/safety Donovan Fields got going.

Fields led the Tiger scoring in an almost epic comeback against Red Oak in Game 2/Week 1. Against Red Oak, Fields scored on both sides of the ball. He scored one touchdown by jumping a route from his safety spot and another on a 41-yard jaunt from the tailback slot.

In a much needed morale win against Forney and with the Tiger starting quarterback Devontay Bell laid out on a trainers table with one knee in a brace and the other under a bag of ice, Fields led a comeback that didn’t land short against Forney.

On a crucial 74-yard drive led brilliantly by backup quarterback Zach Rash, Fields had a 32-yard scamper keeping the drive alive. Two plays later Fields bulled his way into the end zone on a 4-yard run to put the Tigers in the lead.

On the defensive side of the ball, Fields and the rest of the Tiger defense toughened up on a Forney squad that knocked out the Tigers starting backfield before all was said and done. In the second half, Tiger defenders stepped up and allowed the Jackrabbits a paltry 43 yards of total offense.

“We knew we had to step up and do our jobs,” Fields said. “We had some guys go down, and we had to defend our turf.”

The going has been tough since the second half began in Denton Ryan in Week Zero. From all indications, the going is about to get a lot tougher. Not to mention a short week and a televised contest on Thursday Night against Waxahachie. And not to mention, the Indians just throttled West Mesquite 42-0.

If the tough get going like Fields did against Red Oak and Forney, the Tigers have lots of opportunity. If the tough get going like Rash did stepping in for Bell, a player that started on the varsity as a freshman, the Tigers will show something when the TV cameras come on Thursday night.

“We battled through some adversity tonight, and I’m proud of the kids,” Tigers head coach Phil Castles said. “We will find out some things in the next few days, make some adjustments and continue to work hard.”

Players on this team are beginning to solidify their spots. Players on this team are beginning to step up when key players go down.

Two years ago, a player named Cameron Washington stepped in when a player went down. All he did was break one of the most hallowed records in the Tiger book. No one has had a more productive season from the running back position than Washington did in 2011.

Tough things happen, and when they do tough players get going.

“I just do what I can to help my team.” Fields said. “I didn’t like seeing our quarterback hurt. I hate it for him. I just wanted to step up and help.”
