Corsicana —
After Navarro’s soccer team finished off Tuesday’s upset of No. 2 Tyler, Lady Bulldogs volleyball coach Kasey McBrearty, standing on the sideline, asked her team a question.
“How fired up are you now because I am,” she said, knowing that her players were getting a shot at No. 7 Tyler on Wednesday night at home. Watching another upset could only help.
Twenty-four hours later, it didn’t carry over. Tyler dominated Navarro, winning in three fast sets 25-12, 25-17, 25-16 at the K. and Ida Wolens Special Events Center.
The Lady Bulldogs (7-6, 1-2) were never able to get it going against the Lady Apaches, trailing by five or more points in each set most of the night. It was a disappointment for McBrearty, who has high expectations for her team.
“We prepared all week and this is how we played,” McBrearty said.
Tyler (16-2, 3-0) never left any openings. The Lady Apaches were spotty at times on their serves, but once the ball was in play, they were pretty much flawless.
Every time Navarro was able to get a little bit of momentum, like in the second set when the Lady Bulldogs closed to within 18-14, Tyler had an answer, scoring 7 of the last 10 points.
For Navarro, Xzache Mathis and Anny Jimenez had their moments and so did Audi Nesheva. Newcomer Marquisha Matthews from Seguin showed flashes.
But overall, this was Tyler’s night. Navarro will find out if they’ve closed the gap on Tyler on Oct. 17 in the Rose City.
