FERRIS —
Mildred came into Tuesday's playoff opener wanting to control the tempo and take Sunnyvale apart with its fast-paced offense.
The Raiders had other ideas.
Sunnyvale controlled things with its tight defense, and Mildred missed all 12 of its 3-pointers in the second half and shot only 13 percent from behind the arc in a 63-45 loss to Sunnyvale in a Region II-2A bi-district playoff game.
Eagles leading scorer Nic Shimonek scored 17 points but even he admitted after the game that he had an off shooting night, as did his teammates.
"Nothing was going in for us tonight," Shimonek said. "That was my worst shooting night all year."
Mildred (16-5) faced an uphill climb all night. Daniel Folsom scored on a drive to the basket to tie the game at 14-14, and the Eagles didn't score for the next six minutes. Sunnyvale went on a 10-0 run to take a 24-14 lead.
Sunnyvale (22-7) continued the defensive intensity in the third quarter as Mildred made just two shots.
"They did a real good job controlling us on defense," Mildred coach Daniel Johnston said. "They forced us into some bad shots and there were times we didn't make the extra pass."
Mildred had a frustrsting night, upending its own momentum with three techinical fouls.
"I know we did," Shimonek said of getting frustrated.
Still, it was just a night where Sunnyvale had a near perfect game, especially on defense. And Mildred struggled.
"We didn't play well," Johnston said. "And they did."
