CHS Track: Tigers to send three runners to regionals

Corsicana — Sandra Martinez knows all the hard work has paid off.

The Tigers’ runner will represent Corsicana in the Region II-4A Cross Country Meet on Saturday, one of several Golden Circle area athletes who will run in meets in Arlington and Humble.

Martinez said Friday before a practice run that she can’t wait for Saturday morning.

"This has been one of my greatest accomplishments and I couldn't have done it without Coach (Bobby) August who has always pushed me and believed in me more than i believed in myself," Martinez said. "He's a great inspiring man who does good things for his kids and makes an impact in everybody's life. Cross country is a great sport and running helps me when im stressed out and it has made me gain plenty of confidence and has helped me become a better leader as I prepare for soccer season."

The Tigers will send three runners to regionals. Joining Martinez at Vandergriff Park in Arlington are senior Dustin Welch and sophomore Erik Gonzalez.

The Blooming Grove boys are considered to have the best chance to make it out of regionals as a team for the state week next Saturday. The Lions’ toughest competition will be from Salado, Bruceville-Eddy, New Diana and Cameron Yoe.

“We’ll be somewhere between third and fifth,” Hawkins said. “There will be two teams going home unhappy. I just want us to focus on the good things that happen for us.”

Hunter Hawkins, Skyler Hawkins, Tyler Baumgartner and Daniel Pelzel finished in the Top 4 in the District 23-2A meet for Blooming Grove and will lead the Lions into regionals.

Pressley Atkeisson and Jesse Devries, who were 1-2 in district, are the Lady Lions’ top threats to make it to state.

The Rice boys and Mildred girls also qualified teams for regionals after finishing in the Top 3 in district.
