ARLINGTON —
For four innings, the Tigers season opener went just how new coach Heath Autrey planned it.
Starter Holden Grounds pitched four solid innings. The Tigers scored two first-inning runs.
The problem was the final three innings didn't go well at all in a 6-2 loss to Aledo on Tuesday at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
Tiger pitchers combined for six walks in the final three innings, plus two errors. There was also a passed ball.
The Tigers' hitters had a worse ending, making their final 11 outs on strikeouts.
The Tigers' 2-0 lead disappeared in the bottom of the fifth. Ridge Cook had an RBI double for Aledo off of Jeremy Fowler and a passed ball on Karsen Minniear to tie the game at 2-2.
Tigers reliever Hunter Melton had a rough first outing of the year. He appeared to strike out the first batter he faced, but didn't get the call as the bottom of the sixth started with a walk.
Another walk followed and then Melton gave up the lead on a changeup to Austin Byrd for a 3-2 Aledo lead. The Bearcats added runs on a throwing error by Melton and a misplayed bunt by Matt Burns.
Corsicana took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a ringing double off the wall by Melton - who hit a long home run here last year - and a passed ball later scored him in the inning.
Grounds gave the Tigers four strong innings. He had five ground ball outs in the first two innings. He had five strikeouts in the next two innings as Corsicana took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth.
