Eight months ago Navarro freshmen Chad Young and Gage Curry squared off in a classic dual in Mesquite as their Poteet and Corsicana’s teams squared off in a 1-0 thriller.
On Thursday, they combined to help defending national champion Navarro sweep its season-opening doubleheader against North Central Texas.
Young, the Poteet lefty who beat Curry that night last March, allowed just three hits and had 10 strikeouts in his junior college debut. Curry, who had a near no-hitter that night in Mesquite, got the final two outs, the last on a rundown, as the Bulldogs held on for a 4-3 victory over North Central.
Navarro (2-0) won the first game of the doubleheader at Graham Field, 7-5, as Young’s Poteet teammate, freshman Blake Griffin, got the final three outs for his first college save.
It was a Poteet-Corsicana day. If only injured sophomore shortstop Brett Doe, also of Poteet, had made a clutch defensive play to win one of the games.
“That’s pretty crazy,” Young said of the ex-Tiger Curry saving the game for him. “I expected to come here and I am really cool with him. We had a great pitching dual and now there he is helping me out.”
Young excelled in the middle innings, pounding the strike zone. He struck out the side in the fifth inning and then after allowing two hits in the sixth inning picked up two more strikeouts to keep the lead at 4-1.
Alex Dumaine got one out in the top of the seventh before allowing two baserunners, setting the stage for Curry in his first college appearance. Curry got a fielders’ choice, then had a hit batter to load the bases with two outs.
He induced a slow roller to second base, but Mason Salazar misplayed the ball and then threw late to first base. The Bulldogs ended up getting the final out on a rundown that included six throws before third baseman Tyler Wilson tagged out the runner to win the game.
“I was pumped out there,” Curry said. “It was fun. We got the win.”
Navarro won the first game as freshman Matt Lynch picked up the win and Griffin came on to get the save. The Bulldogs fell behind 3-0 in the top of the second but rallied for four runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning.
Jake Sutton was the standout in the first game with two hits and a run scored when he went from first to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error by North Central catcher Brandon Provost.
Still, the day belonged to two Pirates and a Tigers as three freshmen pitchers played a pick part in the Bulldogs opening the season with a sweep.
