Corsicana —
Following Friday’s tough district opener against Tyler John Tyler, head coach Phil Castles addressed his team. The main message immediately following a 63-14 loss was simplistic. He told his team that three teams in the district were 1-0 and three teams were 0-1, and that is the best way to put a 49-point loss behind you.
All that matters is that the Tigers are currently one in the loss column, and a trip to Nacogdoches is on the horizon.
For one quarter, the Tigers looked like they could accomplish what not too many people thought they could and that was to hang with the third-ranked team in the state.
When linebacker Jacob Grayson almost took an interception to the house to give the Tigers a lead, one thought of 2009 when Ike Hunter intercepted a Waco Midway pass and did reach paydirt.
That 2009 squad shocked Waco Midway that night (Midway was also ranked third in the state) as that victory helped define that season.
The key is to not let the loss to Tyler John Tyler define 2012.
There are not many ultimatums coming from this column space, but I will throw one out. The Tigers must win this week to have a shot to play in week 11.
No ifs, ands or buts, this team needs a win and needs it in three days. The Tigers have to be 1-1 after two weeks of district play. Math says not so fast. Football logic says very fast.
One game that begins four weeks of a football schedule that determines this 2012’s squad record book fate.
The Tigers can run the football. Tiger rushers still maintained a 4 yard per carry average against Tyler John Tyler. The Tigers can throw the football. Zach Rash hit Bobby Wallace for an 84-yard touchdown pass to help tie the game in the first quarter against a team many are picking to win the State 4A Title. The play was one of the longest pass plays of the modern Tiger era. The Tigers can play defense. The same defense that held Ryan to 3 first half points and Red Oak to seven second-half points basically the same unit that will be in Nacogdoches on Friday.
Now, they have to do all of these things better than their opponent. This bunch is battle tested. They have seen the mountain top of 4A in John Tyler, and were 22 points better in a half of football than a 5A Denton Ryan team that opened District 5-5A with a victory.
A 1-5 record would bend the confidence of any squad, the key for 2012 is for the Tigers to not let it break them before Friday. A win Friday, and this bunch is in the thick of the 16-4A race.

There is a scandal brewing in Austin. No, it has nothing to do with Rick Perry and the rainy day fund or allowing guns on college campuses. It concerns Mack Brown’s boys at the University of Texas. Apparently, Mack has filed as a non-profit organization with the IRS. Unfortunately, he filed as a 501C under the name “The U‘T’ Party,” and the IRS has put them under intense scrutiny.

When Nakaila Banks led off with a single and scored soon after a sacrifice bunt and two errors, it looked like Hubbard might be looking at a big offensive night.
