Mildred Thunder win twice, move into Freshmen District final

Game 4, Tuesday, July 5

Mildred Thunder 18, Malakoff Adjusters 1 (4)

The Thunder scored at least three runs in each inning as they set up a winner’s bracket final matchup with the Malakoff Eliminators. Abbie Burnham and Allison Nix each hit two home runs. Burnham scored four runs.

Ally McKendree did not allow a hit in four innings.

Mildred Thunder 19, Athens Aftershock 4 (3)

The Thunder spotted Athens a 4-0 lead, then tacked on six and 11-run innings, all on just six hits.

Allison Nix singled, doubled and tripled and drove in three runs to pace Mildred. The Thunder benefited from 13 walks and hit batters, and four Athens errors. Athens had one hit off Ally McKendree.

Malakoff Eliminators 6, Athens Wild Things 5

The Eliminators trailed until a three-run fifth, then fell behind again, 5-4, entering the bottom of the sixth. Cheyenne Ramsey had a walk-off, two-RBI single to end it after the Eliminators went two-up, two-down to start the frame. She batted with the bases loaded after two intentional walks.

Ramsey was 4 for 4, and the top four in the order went 10 for 14. The Wild Things had two hits total.

Malakoff advanced to a 1 p.m. Monday winner’s bracket game with the Mildred Beast, while Athens fell into the 8 p.m. Tuesday elimination game.

Malakoff Eliminators 18, Mildred Texas Beast 0 (3)

Hazel Pumpel was 4 for 4 and pitched the Eliminators into the Wednesday elimination game. She had two home runs among her hits, and limited the Beast to one hit.

Candace Dennis was 3 for 3 with a double, triple and home run.

    The Navarro Bulldogs continue to be a pipeline to Division I baseball programs.
    Outfielder Jake Sutton and pitcher J.T. Autrey verbally committed to Lamar University, totaling six Navarro sophomores to sign or commit off this year’s team which made it to the championship game of the Region XIV Tournament.

Offensive coordinator Kevin Morton, 40, was offered the athletic director and head football coach’s job in Normangee Wednesday night and accepted. Normangee Superintendent Jerry Burger said Morton will be the only candidate presented to the board next Thursday.

    Navarro left fielder Kaleb Goodell was named the Region XIV Player of the Year and three other Bulldogs made the all-region team. Goodell was joined on the All-Region XIV team by pitcher Gage Curry — the freshman from Corsicana — as well as third baseman Craig McConaughy.

    Mildred senior Katie Tapley was named 14-2A Most Valuable Player voted on by the district coaches.
    Tapley batted over .500 for the season and had eight home runs.

  • Navarro, Corsicana HS to host baseball camp

    Navarro College and Corsicana High School will host an All-Star Baseball Camp June 4-6 at Corsicana High School.
    The camp is for ages 6 through 16 years old. Each day’s session will go from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
