It’s been a great week for the Blooming Grove Lions 8U Machine Pitch and Kerens Bobcats 6U T-Ball teams.
They’re both going to the TTAB State Tournament.
Kerens won the District 2 6U T-Ball Championship in Hillsboro, beating the Hillsboro Bad News Bears 23-20 in the title game Friday night.
Meanwhile, the Blooming Grove Lions won the District 11 8U Machine Championship in Mildred, beating the Malakoff Orioles 16-1 on Wednesday night in the title game.
Blooming Grove will play in the TTAB 8U Machine Pitch State Tournament in Chandler the week of July 23-27. The Lions were 10-2 during the regular season and are 20-3 overall.
“We’ve basically been together for four years and this team has only lost eight games,” Blooming Grove coach Melvin Watkins said. “We’ve added a few players each season and only missed the playoffs once when they were 4.”
Watkins said all 12 players on the roster would be picked as All-Stars. “We don’t have anyone who stands out against everyone else,” Watkins said.
Kerens will play in the TTAB 6U T-Ball State Tournament in Temple the week of July 23-27.
“We’re real fired up,” Kerens coach Matt Lynch said. “That’s pretty awesome for those kids. Those little kids have a lot of fight in them. They played with a lot of heart. We were down 14-1 in the first game and came back and won by a run. Every game was like that.”
Top players in the district tournament were first baseman Ryan Priddy, who stepped up and made good stops; Breylon Vanibuls from Mildred, who hit several home runs; third baseman Lane Lynch, who hit for high batting average and ran the bases well; and Adrian Baston, who pitched and played second base and also hit and ran the bases well.
Both teams are taking donations for travel. For the Kerens Bobcats, contact Kristen Lynch at 903-641-2118. The Bobcats will have a car wash at the Kerens Bank on Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon.
For the Blooming Grove Lions, contact Melvin Watkins at 214-663-3820.
14U Mildred Monsters take 2nd place: The Mildred Monsters were on the brink of winning the District 5 14U Tournament, but lost twice on Friday night to the BMC Rangers to take second place.
The Monsters, who were 3-0 to start the tournament, needed to win one of the games against the Rangers to make it to state. They almost pulled it out in the second game, losing 11-10.
The Monsters had two outs in the final inning before loading the bases. It took a diving catch in the outfield to beat them. The Monsters finished the season with a 12-5 record.
“They did very well,” Monsters coach Kirby Hill said. “They’re one step closer to getting ready for high school.”
Top players for the Monsters were Will Burnham, who had three home runs; Andrew Hill, who played a solid second base; Justin Jenkins, who played center field and pitched; Corsicana’s D.J. Minniear, a pickup player, played well at shortstop and pitched; Dalton Dickerson, who caught every game despite the heat; and Rice’s Conner Roberts, another pickup player, had a home run.
12U Kerens Bobcats finish in 2nd place: The Kerens Bobcats finished as runnerups in the District 7 12U Tournament in Mabank, falling in the title game to the Malakoff Nationals, 13-3.
The Nationals will head to the state tournament in Athens. The Mildred Eagles came in fifth place. Kerens went 3-2 in the district tournament and 15-3 overall for the season.
“We had a great season,” Kerens coach Brandon Blue said. “Our experience with each other helped. We’ve had that team for six years now.”
Blue said it was a complete team effort for the Bobcats this season.
10U Rice Bulldogs take 4th place: The Rice Bulldogs took fourth place in the District 10 10U Tournament played in Rice.
Rice, which won the Richland-Chambers League, finished the season with a 15-2 record. The Malakoff Rangers won district and head to state in Killeen.
“We were OK,” Rice coach Gary Teague said. “We have a better team than that. We ran out of gas.”
Top players in the tournament for Rice were Tanner Carlisle, Josh Alsup, Colton White and Elizar Nezar.
