Corsicana —
Bianca Patterson and Adi Nesheva probably know best how to gauge the Navarro women’s volleyball team’s 2-2 start to the season at the Midland Tipoff Classic last weekend.
They say progress is being made headed into Wednesday’s home opener.
The Bulldogs went 18-11 last season, but nine of their losses came in conference matches. Only three of them came in the matches that really counted.
So it’s not so much about the record right now, but more the interworkings of the team. And on that alone, the trip to West Texas was a success.
“It went well,” Patterson said. “It was a good experience. We were able to bond as a team for the first time.”
Navarro looks to carry over the good feeling to a quad match on Wednesday at Wolens Special Events Center. The Bulldogs play San Jacinto at 3:30 p.m. and Wharton College at 7:30 p.m.
Navarro split matches each day, beating Cisco in 3 and losng to Temple in 4 the first day, and beating Lee in 4 and losing to Midland in four on Day 4.
The trip out of town gave new coach Kasey McBreatry a chance to get to know her team even better, and to communicate witht them.
“Midland was a big deal,” McBreatry said. “We had a team discussion about being selfless. Putting yourself first means you’re not understanding what team and family mean.”
The players saying the get the message. They are becoming a family, eating together, hanging out together, going to church together, doing their nails together.
“”Coach McBrearty holds us more accountable,” Nesheva said. “She wants us to be more of a family. We’re working hard together on and off the court.”
