16 champions crowned at Mertz Summer Open

— Alex Layfield won in straight sets, but it wasn’t easy as he defeated his father Kyle for the Men’s Open division title at this weekend’s 15th Annual Mertz Corsicana Tennis Open.

Alex, who had to fend off college players from Hardin-Simmons to get the final, defeated Kyle 7-5, 7-5 on Saturday.

In the other major divisions, Caroline Kennemore defeated Cecilia Hernandez 6-2, 6-1 in the Girls 14’s Singles division, and Trent Hayes defeated Daniel Barrera with a spirited comeback, winning 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.
