BLOOMING GROVE — —
It’s time for new beginnings in Blooming Grove, where the Lady Lions have an entire new girls coaching staff.
Kathryn Wilganowski’s volleyball team will be the first to take the court Tuesday night in Venus with a dual match against Venus and Grandview.
Blooming Grove won two games last year and didn’t win in district. Needless to say there’s been a whole new culture change with the volleyball program.
“It’s been absolutely excellent,” Blooming Grove athletic director Gary Grubbs said. “I’ve been to practices and scrimmages. The players have responded really well to it.”
Wilganowski has put in new terminology and a new defense. So there have been some growing pains. She is hopeful that non-district will provide enough matches to get ready for the important part of the schedule.
“The preseason is going to be our training ground,” Wilganowski said. “We have some bad habits to break. A lot of it was learned last year. We’re working through some things and they’re already on the line of wanting to win.”
Wilganowski returns to coaching volleyball for the first time since 2003 at Rosebud-Lott. She was hired out of Bremond, where she was the girls basketball coach.
She’s aware of the struggles Blooming Grove had last year. But she’s pleased with the hard work and the leadership she’s found with seniors Hannah Chaffin and Lauren Miller and juniors Steely Southard and Falcon Thompson.
“They went through a lot last year,” Wilganowski said. “The girls are really excited. I’m really impressed with them. They’re a hard working group.”
