There will be a benefit dinner and “Elvis” Show for ex-Rice, Navarro soccer player Brittany Martin to raise sponsorship for her to go to Italy where she was selected to tour with the U.S. International Soccer Team in June 2013.
The event will take place Saturday at the First Baptist Community Center at 201 S. Dallas St. in Rice.
Dinner will be served starting at 6 p.m. with barbeque, sandwiches, chips, dessert and drink. Mike Garrett from Anton, Tex. will perform his “Elvis” show at 7 p.m. Mike is well known in the Lubbock area for his “Elvis” performances and other band entertainment.
This kind of opportunity is a chance of a lifetime and a dream come true. Please come join us in helping Brittany live her dream and proudly represent the USA.
Martin was a standout youth player despite Rice High School not having a soccer program. She went on to star at Navarro for two seasons.
Martin, who recently finished her senior season as a forward for Texas Women’s University, was selected to the 2012 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-South Central Region third team.
Martin is the second player in TWU soccer history to earn the NSCAA All-Region honor.
The All-Region selection was the third postseason award for Martin this season. She was selected to the First Team All-Lone Star Conference and LSC All-Academic Team.
Martin led the Pioneers in scoring the last two seasons and set a new single-season record in points (23) and goals (10) this season. She finished the season ranked second in the conference in both categories. Martin also led the team in shots (57) and shots on goal (28).

GC Baseball: ’Dogs want more - Windthorst next up for surging Dawson
At this point, it might be easy to classify the rest of the baseball season for Dawson as gravy. But hold on a minute, coach Bo Moore said. The Bulldogs (20-7) are in the Region II-1A semifinals, the club’s deepest trek in many, many moons. To do that, they beat a Dodd City team that ousted them last year in the area round.
