The music was cranked up in one gym Wednesday afternoon, the Lady Tigers shooting free throws at the end of practice. In the main gym, boys coaches Don Newton and Nicholas Claiborne were facing off with eight of their players in a 3-point shooting contest.
The coaches were red hot from behind the arc, but didn't win -- that's if you're keeping score.
Friday night presents another chance for the Tigers and Lady Tigers to play in the biggest games of their season. They want and need your support.
For the girls, their 1-5 district record doesn't indicate how important Friday's game against Nacogdoches is for the Lady Tigers. The girls are only a game out of fourth place behind Jacksonville and Whitehouse. With two or three wins in their last four games, they can grab that fourth-place spot and make the playoffs.
The Lady Tigers have a sense they have momentum after almost stealing Tuesday's game at Lindale. Corsicana rallied from 14 down in the fourth quarter and had a chance to tie the game down by two points with 2:30 left in the game.
Lindale is ranked No. 14 in the state and is 6-0 in district. The Lady Tigers almost pulled off the upset of the year in 16-4A. So even in a loss, they gained some momentum heading a crucial three-game stretch against second place Nacogdoches -- 4-2 in district -- and then back-to-back games against the teams the Lady Tigers are chasing, Tuesday at home against Whitehouse and Friday on the road at Jacksonville.
"We're close," Prevost said. "We played with a lot of heart in the fourth quarter against Lindale. We can play with all four teams left (on our schedule)."
The Tiger boys can close out the first half of the district scehdule with a winning record. They have the upset of the year in 16-4A with last week's home win against John Tyler. The Tigers followed that up with a 49-40 road win at Lindale.
Corsicana, in a third-place tie with Tyler, can get the upper hand on the fifth-place team, Nacogdoches, with a win Friday night. It will push a season that's already a big success with 20 wins one step closer to the postseason.
It will be junior high night at Tiger Gym. The crowds have been getting bigger with each game. The Tiger players, especially the boys, said you made a big difference in inspiring them to the victory over the Lions.
"We had one of our best crowds for the John Tyler game," Newton said. "It made a huge difference."
A raucous gym can make the difference. It can rattle the visiting team. It can impact how the game is called by the officials. Basketball is all about having an edge in your home gym.
That's why the coaches and players ask for your continued support. Keeping turning out and you might be the difference in the Tigers making the playoffs.
