Middle School Hoops: Collins Catholic wins twice, goes to 5-0

The Collins Catholic School boys varsity basketball team remained undefeated Saturday with a 36-27 comeback win over St. Piux X in Garland.

The rematch of last year’s championship game, won by SPX, started out much the same, with Collins getting off to a very slow start shooting and handling the ball. Numerous turnovers by the Bears led to a 19-10 halftime deficit.

Collins came out in the second half with their high pressure defense led by key steals by Cole Miller, Douglas Halito and Mitch Melendez. The turning point in the game came with two minutes left in the third quarter.

Viet Long Troung made a perfect bounce pass inside to Halito, who drove to the basket, dropped a pass across the lane to Anthony Butler, who laid the ball in for Collins first lead of the game. Two consecutive 3-pointers by Cade Flores and Tre McAdams put the Bears in front to stay early in the fourth.

Then a consistent half-court offense, and two quick transition scores off 3-point misses by SPX, combined with additional scoring and a key rebound by Butler, helped Collins move to 4-0 in Dallas Parochialleage Division 3 play.

The Bears won again on Sunday, beating St. Patrick 48-21.

The Bears host Holy Family at Collins Middle School gym next Saturday at 11 a.m.
