Ennis' Harrell to step down

Ennis — Ennis coach Sam Harrell will step down as head football coach next month due to a battle with multiple sclerosis, according to a school district news release.

Harrell, who had coached at Ennis since 1994, will take over as director of the district's career and technology education program in August. He will spend the summer undergoing treatments out of the country, according to the release.

Steve Marrow will take over for Harrell effective June 5 and will coach the 2010 season.

Harrell was 153-51 in 16 seasons. He led the Lions to state titles in 2000, 2001 and 2004, when his son, former Texas Tech standout Graham Harrell, was under center.
