Corsicana softball: Almost there

Lady Tigers just miss in 4-2 loss to Midlothian

Lady Tigers coach Elizabeth Collier says her team is “right there,” and she’s correct.

Corsicana is on the verge of knocking of a top dog like Midlothian, one of best 4A teams in the North Texas. That was evident in a 4-2 loss on Tuesday at the Corsicana Softball Fields.

A timely hit here or there, beaning the No. 9 hitter with an inside pitch, failing to catch a popup or getting the ball in more quickly from the outfield, those were things that cost the Lady Tigers.

“We’re there,” Collier said. “It’s not that we’re not there. We just have some things that need to be taken care of.”

Being resilient is not one of them. Twice the Lady Tigers trailed by a run Tuesday night, and twice they fought back to tie the game.

Midlothian took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on McKenzie Grier’s run-scoring single. The Lady Tigers (14-8, 1-2) answered the run in the bottom of the inning when Kateyln Moody was hit by a pitch and later scored on Casey McClure’s single.

Midlothian (14-7, 2-1) caught a break on an error in the outfield and took a 2-1 lead on a single by Hillary Heisreith in the top of the fifth. Corsicana’s Katie Cook answered that run in the bottom of the inning with a solid single to left to score Moody again.

The Lady Panthers took a 4-2 lead in the top of the sixth. With two outs, pitcher Betsy Woodall, who pitched well allowing only one earned run, hit No. 9 hitter Savannah Valderas. She scored on Brady Luedtke’s double to left center. A dropped popup at shortstop by Cook made it 4-2.

Still, the Lady Tigers loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh as Moody reached on an error, Audra DeMoss reached on an infield hit and Spencer Haynie walked with two outs. Woodall struck out on a high strike three to end the game.

Collier said the Lady Tigers have slumped lately at the plate, and it’s something they have to break out of.

“We’re struggling at the plate right now,” Collier said. “Sometimes that comes and goes. It’s a few mental things. It’s not physical errors.”
