Corsicana —
We already knew the Tigers were off to a hot basketball start.
The fact that the heat got turned up even more this weekend? It’s a bona fide inferno now. Our grass fire man — photographer Ronald Farmer — is on alert.
The Tigers are 7-1 after beating Tyler All Saints 59-45 on Saturday in the Bruce G. Brookshire Tournament.
“Winning the trophy and winning a championship which is something that our kids haven’t done playing basketball in Corsicana is a big deal,” Tigers coach Don Newton. “It was definitely uncharted territory for a lot of guys. It was a good weekend for us.”
The Tigers are on a seven-game winning streak and we’re trying to check out the record books for the last time that happened. If you know, e-mail me at twills@corsicanadailysun.com. I’m serious.
Corsicana continues to get big scoring games from Dzifa Mallet and Mike Lewis, who both scored 17 points in the win over All Saints.
In Friday’s opening round, Ernest McGhee scored 20 points and Mallet had 17 points in a 55-44 victory over Houston St. Thomas Episcopal. Lewis had 25 points in a 63-54 second-round win over Tyler Grace.
The Tigers will get a big-time test against Waco La Vega at 9 a.m. Thursday in the opening round of the Fairfield Tournament. La Vega made it to the state tournament last year.
“We definitely have a good test coming on Thursday morning against Waco La Vega,” Newton said. “It will be a good measuring stick for us.”
