Midnight Madness, Wortham style

New AD, coach isn't wasting time

Call it Midnight Madness. Wortham style.

Wortham football coach and athletic director Shane Doege took the Bulldogs athletic program out of the box at midnight Sunday night. The Bulldogs had Midnight Madness — made popular by college basketball teams — at Bulldog Stadium.

The football and volleyball teams, cheerleaders and band all took part in the event.

“There was a lot of excitement,” said Doege, who takes over the football program and athletic director for the first year. “It was kind of like a pep rally at midnight. Our focus and intensity was amazing. I couldn’t sleep after it.”

Doege wants Wortham, which has a strong tradition in several sports, to have a fresh approach with a new volleyball coach too, Lorie Ward.

“The theme is we’re not going to waste a second,” Doege said.

At midnight, all the stadium lights were turned off and the Bulldog inflatable tunnel was out. As the football and volleyball teams came out of the tunnel, the lights were turned on with the cheerleaders on the field and the band playing.

“The cool thing about it was we had them in the runout tunnel and the lights were out,” Doege said. “They came out and we turned the lights on.”

  • RON MORGAN.jpg Morgan: Solid shape - Despite injuries, Rangers just fine

Let me see a show of hands. Who was worried this season about the Rangers losing Josh Hamilton, Michael Young and Mike Napoli? Come on, now. You know it was hard to see how they would replace both the production and the leadership provided by that threesome. Oh, and let’s add that they would have to start the season without Coby Lewis and Neftali Feliz. Surely, you had to wonder if even Moses could lead us could lead us out of the AL West.
