Corsicana —
The pitch was packed, and the Navarro Lady Bulldogs put on a strong showing in their first home game Monday afternoon.
Nugene Nugent picked up where she left off last season, scoring two goals as the Lady Bulldogs blanked Richland College 3-0 at the Navarro Soccer Fields.
The Lady Bulldogs played in front of a crowd of more than 200 fans as most of the athletes and coaches from Navarro’s other athletic programs came out to support the team.
“It was good,” Navarro coach Debbie Bonner said. “We were a little slow, but it’s early. We weren’t very quick to find our rhythm but we will.”
Jodian Morris also scored a goal as Navarro built on a 1-0 halftime lead with two goals just under nine minutes apart in the second half.
Nugent made it 2-0 with a sliding strike from about 5 yards out with 24:45 left in the match. Nugent, who earned All-American honors last year, now has 24 goals in 19 college matches.
Morris, an All-Region selection last year, put the match away with a goal with 16:04 left.
Nugent opened up the scoring with just over eight minutes gone in the match. Navarro had 16 shots on the game, 10 on goal.
Richland had eight shots with only three on goal as the Lady Bulldogs defense, led by Lexi Riggs, put the clamps on Richland.
