For a half, the Rice Bulldogs did everything they could to stay with the red hot Kerens Bobcats, even withstanding a furious full court press.
But as Kerens coach Don Enis told injured Rice sharpshooter Dalton Pike after the Bobcats’ 61-37 victory, “we’re a second half team.”
Yes the Bobcats are. Kerens used its transition game to pull away in the third quarter, outscoring Rice 17-4 to take a 45-22 lead.
“We were a little sloppy,” Kerens coach Don Enis said. “We got some players back and we hadn’t pressed in a while so we did that. We were a little rusty.”
Kerens (18-7, 8-0) bolted out to a 14-5 lead after the first quarter, using the press to generate steals and easy baskets. Paul Williams and Tobyus Thomas combined for 10 points and Kevin Townsel hit a long 3-pointer.
Rice didn’t back down in the second quarter, pulling within four on three occasions, the last time at 22-18. But Kerens scored the last six points of the quarter for a double digit lead.
The Bobcats blew it open in the third quarter as Williams, Thomas and Betts combined for 13 of their 17 points.
Thomas finished with a game-high 19 points and Williams added 17. Ragan Henderson scored 15 points for the Bulldogs who played without Pike, who is out for a month with a high ankle sprain.
Kerens continues to grow as a team with two games left in district, Thomas said.
“We’re playing at a high level,” Thomas said. “We feel like we can play with anyone.”
