Depth perception: Lady Cats’ bench geared to take care of business
KERENS — On the eve of their third game with Blooming Grove, the Kerens Lady Cats were talking about “taking care of business.”
It is what coach Denise Lincoln has stressed all season and she said just because today’s game against the Lady Lions is a big game, is no reason to change anything.
“You can’t develop players overnight,” Lincoln said. “They will do the same thing they did in the two previous games and we are not changing anything we do.”
Talk of today’s game didn’t commence until after Tuesday win over Italy.
Wednesday, the Lady Cats went back to work doing the same thing it has done all season.
Kerens spent Thursday’s afternoon practice fine tuning their press defense and making last minute preparations.
But still, Lincoln and her players stress that this is just “another district game.”
“The only difference this time is we are playing on their home floor,” Kerens player RoShonda Tolliver said. “We have to get out take care of what we need to do.
“We don’t want to play them again.”
If Blooming Grove wins today’s game, it would put the Lady Lions and Lady Cats in a tie for first place in District 20-2A.
A fourth game would be necessary to determine the No. 1 seed from the district as long as both teams won its remaining district games.
“It’s always important to get a win,” post Jaycee Colvin said. “Our goal is to win the district championship.”
Each game between the two teams this season has come down to the wire. Kerens has won both games by a margin of 1.5 points.
“We hope it comes down to the wire again,” Lincoln said. “You learn from games like that.
“This will be a playoff atmosphere and yes, it’s too early to be considering this a championship game, but there is no denying that this is a big game.”
The Lady Cats depth has been the difference maker in both meetings between the Lady Lions and Kerens.
Blooming Grove took leads into the fourth quarter in both games — Dec. 7, 2007 at Corsicana High School and Dec. 14, 2007 at Kerens.
The Lady Cats outscored the Lady Lions by a combined 28-17 in the fourth quarter in both games.
“I have as much faith in my first five as I do my second five,” Lincoln said. “We like to run and the depth on our bench has helped us out all season.”
But this time around, Blooming Grove has Kerens right where it wants them — on the Lady Lions home court in front of their own fans.
The Lady Cats expect a large and very loud crowd and surprisingly enough, they want it that way.
“The louder the better,” Lincoln said. “I think we play very well with big crowds and a lot of noise.
“The parents, players and students know this is a big game so I am expecting our fans to travel well.”
Kerens and Blooming Grove will tipoff tonight at the Lions Den at 6:30 p.m.
