Danbury wins 2A baseball title; Carthage, Lufkin advance
Danbury beats Holliday for 2A title
AUSTIN (AP) — Scott Zimerle, 17-0 as a starter, pitched two shutout innings in relief and Danbury rallied from a 5-1 deficit to beat Holliday 6-5 for the Class 2A state championship.
Holliday (30-4) built the lead behind Chris Sadbery's first inning home run and Tyler Cole's inside-the-park homer in the second.
Danbury (32-5) tied it in the fifth on Matt Dees' single to center and took the lead on a sacrifice fly by Garrett Zimmerle.
Scott Zimmerle pitched the final two innings for Danbury.
Walk-off homer in 11th gives Lufkin win
ROUND ROCK, Texas (AP) — Luis Dejesus' two-run home run in the bottom of the 11th inning sent Lufkin to a 4-2 win over Pearland in the Class 5A state semifinals.
Pearland left three runners on base in the top of the inning. Lufkin's Agustin Enriquez singled to left before Dejesus hammered the ball to left center. Dejesus was 0-for-4 at the plate before his final at-bat.
J.P. Clifton got win for Lufkin (30-9) with three scoreless innings in relief Friday. Kevin Miller took the loss for Pearland (30-8-1).
Carthage gets 4-3 win over Andrews
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Matt Bagley hit a seventh inning sacrifice fly that scored Bryce Boone and gave Carthage a 4-3 win over Andrews in a UIL class 3A baseball state semifinal on Friday morning.
The game started on Thursday evening, but was suspended after 2 2/3 innings due to rain and lightening.
Michael Burchett (15-2) pitched a complete game for Carthage (27-6-1). Burchett struck out three and scattered seven hits as he threw two innings Thursday night then five more innings Friday morning.
Boone and Crispin Stanley had two hits each for Carthage. Cameron Stanley added a first inning home run for the winners while Andrews (23-8) got two hits by Kyle Coomer.
Ryan Diaz (8-3) pitched 4 1/2 innings for Andrews, striking out four and allowing four hits and two runs.
Carthage returns Friday afternoon to face Giddings, who defeated Texarkana Pleasant Grove 5-1.
